福尔摩斯探案集:1
Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Scotland and studied medicine there, eventually serving as a physician in the Boer War (1899-1902). But his fame rests on his creation of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. Doyle published his first Holmes tale, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887. Over the following 4o years he published 56 short stories and four novels featuring Holmes and his sidekick, Dr.Watson.
Doyle was knighted in 1903 for his services to the crown, including his authorship of the 1902 pamphlet The War in South Africa... Doyle also created Holmes's nemesis, the arch-villain Professor Moriary, Doyle and Dr. Watson have much in common: both are medical doctors, both are writers, and both served in the British Army. According to his New York Times obituary, Doyle was married to the former Louise Hawkins from 1885 until her death in 1906. He was married again to the former Jean Leckie from 1907 until his own death in 193O. Doyle had two children with his first wife, three with his second.
Sherlock Holmes is without doubt one of the most beloved figures in the history of mystery fiction. Conan Doyle's works were made into several stage plays and feature films. In all, Holmes and Watson were featured in four novels and 56 short stories.
福尔摩斯探案集:1
Sherlock Holmes the name conjures up mysterious visions of dark London nights, fog swirling through sinister alleyways, horses' hooves clattering against damp cobblestones. The master of deduction and his partner, Dr. Watson, have become cultural icons, living on well beyond their 19th-century origins in scores of stories, plays; and films. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, their creator, soon re- alized that the pair had taken on a life of their own. Try as he might to kill Holmes or to retire Watson, their reputations and the public's hunger for their next adventure lived on and gained immense popularity Now you can discover them in their original form.
In 1890s, Sherlock Holmes was a character very much of his time and place, who appealed to British readers directly by confronting the messy, changeable world they lived in. Rather than dwelling in romance or in an idealized past, as many of Arthur Conan Doyle's other characters did, Holmes was grounded squarely in Victorian London. The Sherlock Holmes mystery stories, written over a forty-year span from 1887 to 1927, represented the good, the bad, and the ugly of Victorian society: its ideals, its accomplishments, and its deepest fears.
